Compass Group Applauds the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Efforts for Healthier Oceans

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 21, 2009) – Compass Group applauds the efforts by the Monterey Bay Aquarium on the release of their “Turning the Tide: The State of Seafood” report issued this week.

"I'd like to extend my congratulations to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They have made it easier for companies like us to make purchasing decisions that are not only sustainable but also healthier for our customers,” explains Marc Zammit, Vice President of Sustainability and Culinary for Compass Group North America.

Compass Group is committed to not serving fish from the aquarium's "avoid" list -- rated by scientists as destructive to the oceans. Since 2006, with the aquarium’s guidance, Compass Group has replaced nearly 300,000 pounds of Atlantic cod (a Seafood Watch “Avoid” item) with Pacific cod, Alaska pollock and other more sustainable choices. Additionally, they have decreased its unsustainable shrimp purchases by 835,000 pounds and farmed salmon by 192,000 pounds since 2006. In total, Compass dropped over a million pounds of unsustainable products, including Atlantic halibut, bluefin tuna and orange roughy, and increased its sustainable seafood purchases by 5.5 million pounds by buying more Alaskan pollock, farmed tilapia from Ecuador and wild Alaskan salmon.

“This report represents the next phase for us,” concludes Rick Stone, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for Foodbuy, the purchasing arm of Compass Group. “We look forward to a continued partnership to support healthier oceans and fish populations, and have already begun initiatives to do so.”
