January 29, 2009 - Compass Group EXPANDS HOLD On All Commercially Prepared Products Containing Peanuts, Peanut Butter or Peanut Ingredients Of Any Kind

Some products that were recently cleared are again on HOLD. Units: look for helpful information and updates on MyCompass: https://mycompass.compass-usa.com/foodbuy. You can find a detailed NEW list of cleared products. This NEW list replaces any previous lists, and some products that were previously cleared are no longer on the list.

This is a result of the FDA expanding the recall on products produced by Peanut Corporation of America to include a broad range of products produced at the Blakely, Ga. plant since January 1, 2007.

HOLD ALL Commercially Prepared Products Known or Suspected To Contain Peanuts, Peanut Granules, Peanut Meal, Peanut Flour, Peanut Butter, Peanut Paste, Peanut Syrup, Peanut Sauce or Peanut Variegate UNLESS the product is on the new list.

This hold DOES affect peanut butter spread EXCEPT for the brands listed on the 'cleared' list, which include Jif, Peter Pan, Skippy and Smuckers.

This Hold DOES Affect raw peanuts in any form (roasted, shelled, granules, etc.)

 What You Need To Know
- The FDA is advising consumers to not eat commercially-prepared or manufactured products containing peanut ingredients until further information becomes available about which products may be affected.
- Routine finished product sampling on the part of PCA indicated that there were positive Salmonella results starting in January ‘07 and continuing to the present at the plant in Blakely, GA. This discovery will result in the recalls and withdrawals of, literally, hundreds of individual products.
- Combined lists of 'cleared products' and 'recalled products' are available on MyCompass and are updated there regularly.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

REASON FOR THE FDA WARNING
Since mid April, there have been 613 reported cases of salmonellosis nationwide caused by Salmonella Saintpaul, an uncommon form of Salmonella. At least 69 hospitalizations have been reported. Salmonella Saintpaul with the same genetic fingerprint have been identified in 33 states plus District of Columbia.

ABOUT SALMONELLA
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections particularly in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the organism can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses.

THE INVESTIGATION
According to CDC, this outbreak is NOT over. The FDA completed trace-back of tomatoes alleged to have caused illness to two separate potential "legs" – one leads to Mexico, and one leads to Florida. They mapped out the pathway from the potentially affected farms to the point of consumption, which represents progress in finding the ultimate source of the outbreak. The FDA sent teams to Florida and Mexico last weekend to begin inspection of these farms and to try to narrow the cause of the outbreak. These farms along with their associated distribution chains are going to be part of an ongoing investigation.

June 9, 2008 - Nation-wide Suspension: Tomatoes (1) red plum (2) red Roma (3) round red tomatoes

For your information, we are providing the latest Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer alert.

According to The FDA, a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes

The specific type and source of tomatoes are under investigation. However, preliminary data suggest that raw red plum, red Roma, or round red tomatoes are the cause.

At this time, consumers across the country should limit their tomato consumption to tomatoes that have not been implicated in the outbreak.

As a result, we have taken the following steps:

·          We have removed all raw red plum, red Roma, or round red tomatoes from our menus and recipes until further notice.

·          We have suspended raw prepared products that contain these types of red tomatoes, including but not limited to fresh salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo.

·          We are now using exclusively tomatoes not implicated in the recall including cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached. (Tomatoes grown at home are also reported to be safe.)

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available.

For further information, please consult the FDA’s web site: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html
