Action For Healthy Kids (AFHK)
A national nonprofit organization with a grassroots network of State Team volunteers addressing the childhood obesity epidemic by focusing on improving nutrition and physical activity in schools.

Balanced Choices
Compass Group's comprehensive approach to the health and well being of the clients and customers we serve. 

Chartwells Promise
‘Nourishing students is not only our business; it is our commitment to the communities in which we serve.  Chartwells is a diverse family of dedicated food and nutrition specialists serving the academic community.  We deliver customized solutions that benefit our partners through innovative programs.’

Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004
One section of this act mandates that all school districts participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs must develop a Local Wellness Policy by the fall of 2006.

Circle of Responsibility
Bon Appétit Management Company’s ground-breaking wellness program. Circle of Responsibility takes a macro view of wellness. A healthy environment, community, and café menu are all vital to the well being of our guests.

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)
The DRIs are actually a set of four reference values: Estimated Average Requirements (EAR), Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), Adequate Intakes (AI), and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels, (UL) that have replaced the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). Eat. Learn. Live
A reflection of the ‘Chartwells Promise’ in three simple words - which stand for who we are and what we do. Now also used as the slogan for Compass Group's Balanced Choices program.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Federal Agency which,  through its Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), is responsible for regulation of food labeling and providing consumers with information on such topics as food safety, food allergens and disaster planning. www.fda.gov


HealthSmart™
A comprehensive nutrition and physical activity curriculum that Chartwells has adopted and donated to each school district that we partner with.

Local Wellness Policy
Brings local school communities together to assess their school nutrition environment and make the necessary policy changes that will positively impact the health of students.  Specific areas that must be addressed include nutrition standards for foods served, goals for nutrition education, goals for physical activity and other initiatives that promote a healthy school environment.

MyPyramid
Launched by the USDA, this new symbol and interactive food guidance system supports the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and gives in depth consumer information while encouraging healthy eating and exercise.  For more information visit www.mypyramid.gov.

National Lunch and Breakfast Program (NSLBP)
Federally assisted meal program operating in more than 99,800 public schools, which provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to more than 26 million children each school day.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Federal Agnecy responsible for:
1. Developing and promoting dietary guidance linking scientific research to consumers' nutrition needs. The guidance includes Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.
2. Administering domestic food assistance programs for children and low-income individuals. These programs include the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program.
