Chartwells Names Marietta College's New Food Service Provider

MARIETTA, OH (July 7, 2003) —  Marietta College (MC) officials are pleased to announce that Chartwells College & University Dining Services is the new food service provider on campus. Chartwells started at MC on Saturday, June 21, 2003.

"A committee of faculty, administrators and students chaired by Dr. Lon Vickers, associate dean of student life, worked very hard to secure proposals from several vendors, to meet with their representatives, visit campuses to get a first-hand look at the food service operations, to compare proposals, and to make a recommendation," said Dr. Jean A. Scott, Marietta College president. "I am very grateful to that committee for the time and care that they dedicated to this decision. Chartwells comes highly recommended. I look forward to having the company on campus and to working with them to enhance the quality of life on campus for all who use our dining facilities, especially our students."

Marietta College officials are confident that Chartwells' unique programs like Origins, Terra Ve, Sendmunchies.com, the Bistro Grille, and Ritazza Premium Coffee will be well received by the students when they return to campus in August. Labs and night classes begin Aug. 25, with all classes beginning Aug. 26, 2003.

"After a year-long process, the committee of students, faculty and administration is excited about Chartwells partnering with Marietta College to become our dining services and catering provider," Vickers said. "Chartwells not only met the basic requirements of our proposal, but exceeded them. What we are getting are a host of new and exciting food concepts for Gilman Dining Hall."

Two programs that really stood out to the committee were Terra Ve and Origins. Terra Ve will address the needs of the vegetarian/vegan population and Origins is geared primarily to the international students at MC.

"With these two programs, and also the other new concepts, I am certain the students will be more than pleased – they will be impressed with what they are offered," Vickers said.

Another example of Chartwells commitment to providing a quality food service is the Market Place concept. It will include Baja Flats (22 rotating menu themes), Menutainment (bold presentations of an individuals favorite foods and personal ingredient selections), and a coffee and espresso bar concept.

Chartwells will offer continuous dining hours of 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Monday through Friday) and 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday) at Gilman dining hall; 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Monday through Friday) and 12:30 - 7 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday) at Izzy's; and 8 p.m. 11 p.m. (Monday through Thursday) at The Gathering Place.

"After visiting Towson University in Maryland and seeing in practice what Chartwells was proposing, I was convinced that this is what will make a difference in dining services at Marietta," Vickers said.

Vickers also said the committee and the college community is pleased with Chartwells’ plans to renovate Izzy's and The Gathering Place, which will decrease reliance on Gilman dining hall. There is also a major renovation of Gilman planned, which will be done in phases. "Chartwells will be involved with a major renovation of Gilman and when that is coupled with the food I think that will WOW the students," Vickers said.

Chartwells already began providing food for the first of three Freshman Schedule Days June 27-28, 2003.

"We are honored and privileged to have been selected as Marietta College's dining service partner for the future," said Kevin Lyden, regional vice president for Chartwells College & University Dining Services. "Ohio is a growth area for Chartwells, and we look forward to serving and working with the entire Marietta community. We are anxious to get started."

Chartwells is also excited to be able to offer catering services, not only to the MC campus, but also to the Marietta community. Chartwells officials want those in the Marietta area that had catering contracts with a previous food service provider to know that Chartwells will keep those commitments.

Chartwells is a global organization that maintains a strong emphasis on local operations. They take the time to understand the needs of every member of the campus community and can then use the strength of global buying to meet those needs in the most efficient and cost effective way.

From facilities planning and construction management to corporate marketing support, Chartwells' extensive resources make them the ideal choice for Marietta. As an operating division of Compass Group North America, a leader in contract food services, Chartwells has access to global resources to meet Marietta's needs. Chartwells is the food service provider at well-known institutions like the University of Miami (FL), University of Arkansas, University of Utah, University of Louisville, Weber State, DePaul University, Louisiana State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Ohio Wesleyan University.
